Nurse leaders are natural advocates. Learn how to exercise nursing leadership in legislative advocacy. From learning more about who represents you to finding messages that resonate with policy makers, this session will inspire novice advocates to find their voice and help more experienced advocates learn how to expand their influence politically.
About the Speakers:
Dr. Rachel Culpepper is a Registered Nurse with 16 years of experience and has been in nursing leadership for a decade. She currently is a Nursing Director at Indiana University Health West Hospital and holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice along with a certification in Executive Nursing Practice. Dr. Culpepper is a member of the Board of Directors for the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, representing Region 5 (IN, OH, IL, WI, MI), and serves as an affiliate board member for the Indiana Organization for Nursing Leadership and is the co-chair of the Legislative Committee.
In her role on the AONL board, Dr. Culpepper is a founding member of the Nurse Leaders in Advocacy program and contributes to its advisory council. She has advocated at the federal level for seven years, the last five with AONL. She chairs the AONL Education Committee and is actively involved in the Workforce Steering Committee as the Learning Community lead and participates in the newly established Workplace Violence Coalition. Her professional focus is on advancing nursing leadership and advocating for patient access to care.
Stacey Chappell is the senior director of advocacy and external communications at the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, an American Hospital Association affiliate. She oversees the association's communication strategies, external relations and advocacy efforts. Stacey leads AONL’s grassroots activities, including the advocacy academy and advocacy day. She manages media requests, writes policy statements and briefs, testimony and all external communications from association leadership. In addition to her AONL responsibilities, Stacey serves on several AHA cross- association initiatives, including Hospitals Against Violence and behavioral health.
Beginning her career working on Capitol Hill, Stacey has nearly 25 years of public affairs experience in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Stacey previously served as manager of governmental affairs at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, where she oversaw public policy efforts in 26 states and assisted state association leadership in developing legislative and communications strategy to ensure consistency in messaging among the association, state affiliates and grassroots members. Additionally, she managed the association’s political action committee.
Stacey lives in Chicago and is a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee. She holds a certificate in PAC and Grassroots Management from the Public Affairs Council.
